Hyukjun Sohn, born in Seoul in 2002, received his first violin lessons at the age of five. Praised by The Journal of Music (South Korea) as a “violinist with rare concentration and charisma,” he won several competitions in his home country before moving to Germany in 2019. From 2020, Hyukjun has studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with Prof. Ariadne Daskalakis, earning his Bachelor’s degree in 2024. In 2026, he earned his Master’s degree at the Staatliche Hochschule der Musik und Kunst Stuttgart with Prof. Friederike Starkloff.

He is a prizewinner of numerous competitions, including 1st Prize at the Vasco Abadjiev Competition, Cologne Conservatory Violin Competition and 3rd Prize at the Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition. As a soloist, he has performed with the Philharmonie Südwestfalen and the Korean Chamber Orchestra, among others. In 2024, his recital was broadcast on German WDR 3 radio.

In addition to his solo activities, Hyukjun is deeply committed to chamber music and orchestral playing. With ColLAB Cologne, a chamber music ensemble of Cologne Conservatory students, he won the Best Interpretation Prize at the FMB University Competition in 2022. He is a member of Live Music Now Cologne and performs regularly in social institutions. Hyukjun has been invited to perform at multiple chamber music festivals. He has gained orchestral experience in multiple important youth orchestras as principal and in WDR Symphony Orchestra as an academist.

 

Currently, Sohn is the assistant principal of 2nd violins at Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne.
