Hyukjun Sohn - "Violinist with rare concentration and Charisma"

Hyukjun Sohn, born in Seoul in 2002, began playing the violin at the age of five. Since 2020, he has been studying at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with Prof. Ariadne Daskalakis.

He is a prizewinner at numerous competitions, including 1st Prize at the HfMT Köln Violin Competition and 3rd Prize at the Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition. As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras such as Philharmonie Südwestfalen and the Korean Chamber Orchestra. Most recently, his recital was broadcast on WDR 3.

In addition to his solo activities, Hyukjun is passionate about chamber music and orchestral playing. With the ensemble ColLAB Cologne, a chamber music group of students from HfMT Köln, he won the Interpretation Prize at the 2022 FMB University Competition. He is also a member of Live Music Now Cologne, performing regularly in social and medical institutions. He gained orchestral experience as principal second violin with the Korean National Symphony Academy Orchestra and ONJ Luxembourg, and as a member of the Moritzburg Festival Academy Orchestra.

Currently, he is an academist with the WDR Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. Masterclasses with renowned musicians such as Antje Weithaas, Yair Kless, Vadim Gluzman, and Tobias Feldmann as well as DAAD scholarships for projects in Italy and England have enriched his musical development.

He plays on a Jérémie Legrand violin, 2024.
